Dr Balnaves is also actively engaged in research in the area of systematic digital content management, desktop servics supporting digital services and the information commons.
Areas of research focus for Prosentient Systems includes: library systems and services, open source systems and communities, information retrieval systems and systematic reuse of digital content.
Information commons
As more content is "born digital", we are looking at desktop systems for archiving content. The internet is a very convenient and cost effective way for creating and delivering electronic documents such as journals, but it creates a further requirement for the long-term and safe storage of electronic resources in an archive.
Open source systems
We undertake workshops, software development and cross-system integration in open source systems. This has included:
- Our workshop with the UN Centre for Global ICT on open source library management systems, Rome 2010
- Our workshop with the UN Centre for Global ICT on open source digital library systems, Puerto Rico 2011
- Edmund's UN Handbook for ICT in Parliamentary Libraries, made in conjunction with an International Committee of Parliamentary librarians
We are also working on various aspects of integration between open source library systems:
- Joomla with Koha
- Joomla with DSpace
- Koha and DSpace cross integration
